HotSync and FlyBy DB Files

Installing PDB data files:

The first time you install the PDB data files using the Palm HotSync Manager, the files are transferred from your PC to the Palm. They are then marked to be backed up and are sent back to your PC during the same HotSync operation. The files are saved in your Palm/UserName/Backup directory. If you are using the larger data file sets then this process could take upwards of an hour.

Because the HotSync manager marks the new data files to be backed up on each HotSync session, your subsequent HotSyncs will be fairly long as well.

How to speed up HotSync Session times:

Option 1.
The best way to make sure you are not transferring files you do not need to on each HotSync is to use a program like "Backup Bitster". This is a shareware program that lets you select which files are sent to your PC when you HotSync. You can find this program at
www.PalmGear.com. If you need to HotSync your Palm several times a day then we would strongly suggest you use a program like this.

Option 2.
Install the CASL conduit and set it to "Do Nothing". The FlyBy data files will not be backed up to your PC.

Option 3.
Do not use the HotSync manager to install the data files. Use a program like "Pilot Install" to install program and data files. This program will not set the files to be backed up on each hotsync. You can find the program at
http://pinstall.envicon.com

Option 4.
Use the smallest data file set that you might need. For example, if you only fly in the North West US, then use the North West Regional data files (650 records) instead of the entire U.S (7349 records).
